About the Author

Self-Portrait in InkOneliners® was founded by Harry A. Brown, a professional artist since 1970. Working as an art director and graphic artist through the 1980’s and early 90’s, Harry decided to leave the commercial art business to pursue his fine art career (visit www.harrybrownartist.com). Known for his relief paintings and assemblage sculptures, Harry’s works hang in private collections throughout the United States and in Europe.

Since Harry has always found drawing to be relaxing, he thought that perhaps by making some free-form drawings he might be able to better decide what direction to take with his next sculpture series. At first, he made a large group of continuous line drawings without looking at the paper and without lifting his pen from the paper. The technique is used in art schools and is generally associated with life drawing. He looked at the exercise much like a writer looks at automatic writing to break the shackles of writer’s block. He later began to look at the paper, selectively moving his pen, still without breaking contact with the surface. Embellishing his drawings came next. Continuous line paintings and wire sculptures soon followed. What started off as an exercise led to a passion that Harry continues to explore every day, no matter where he travels.

With a 3"x 5" pocket drawing pad on hand at all times, Harry never misses a beat. He has found waiting rooms in doctor’s offices, accountant’s offices, and at airports, to offer tremendous drawing opportunities. When he has a problem to solve or when he just wants to relax, he takes out a pad of paper and begins to draw.

Realizing the stress relieving benefits he had been experiencing through his drawings, he proceeded to develop a method for teaching others. His workshop not only teaches participants how to make continuous line drawings, but how stress affects their health. Harry has been able to consolidate a wealth of information into a 2.5 hour workshop that is designed to be a fun and adventurous journey.

While engaged in market research to determine what group of individuals would most benefit from his workshops, Harry discovered that just about everyone would benefit. Young, old, rich or poor, everyone experiences stress at one time or another. “Stress is a part of our lives. Either we learn to manage it or we let it manage us.”
